Two children drowned after allegedly falling into a rainwater-filled pit while paying in outer north Delhi’s Mukmelpur village on Sunday.

The victims, aged between eight and 10 years, had gone out to play near a vacant plot when they are suspected to have slipped into a deep pit filled with rainwater following recent showers. Unable to climb out, both drowned before help could reach them.

People informed the Delhi Fire Services about the incident, following which rescue teams rushed to the spot.

The children were pulled out of the pit and shifted to Satyawadi Raja Harish Chandra Hospital in Narela where doctors them declared dead on arrival.

The police said preliminary inquiry suggests the children accidentally fell into the water-filled pit while playing. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances leading to the incident.
