Tiruchi Corporation is set to partially commission its 24-hour drinking water supply scheme in Jaya Nagar and Karumandapam by the end of July.
The project, being implemented at a cost of ₹38.49 crore under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 scheme, aims to ensure continuous water supply in select areas on a pilot basis. The project is funded through contributions of ₹11.54 crore from the Centre, ₹10.39 crore from the State government, and ₹16.56 crore from the Tamil Nadu Urban Development Fund (TNUDF).
Work on the project began in 2025. Although the original completion timeline was two years, construction progressed ahead of schedule, and the Corporation now expects the pilot scheme to be fully commissioned within the next three months, with partial commissioning in Jaya Nagar and Karumandapam planned by the end of July.
The pilot scheme covers Ward Nos. 51 to 56, including areas such as Cantonment, Railway Junction, Ponnagar, Jaya Nagar, Viswas Nagar, Karumandapam, and IOB Colony. Once operational, it will supply 19.51 million litres per day (MLD) of drinking water to a population of 1,25,902.
A total of 14,819 domestic and commercial connections are to be provided under the scheme, with smart meters installed along with new connections. As part of the project, 100.69 km of drinking water pipelines are being laid.
A new overhead tank with a capacity of five lakh litres has been constructed at Nakshatra Nagar, in addition to the eight existing overhead tanks serving these areas. The new tank is undergoing trial run to assess water distribution and system performance.
The scheme will incorporate a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to digitally monitor the drinking water supply. Smart meters are being installed to measure water consumption.
Mayor M. Anbazhagan recently held a review meeting with officials to discuss the implementation of the SCADA system as part of the scheme.
