Google recruiter shares resume advice
    Google recruiter shares resume advice
Getting shortlisted for a job at Google is not easy, and recruiters often go through hundreds of applications for a single role. While qualifications matter, how candidates present their experience can also make a big difference. A recruiter from Google's Dublin office has now shared three simple resume tips that could help applicants improve their chances of getting noticed.

Amanda, a recruiter based at Google's Dublin office in Ireland, shared the advice in a video posted by Life at Google, explaining what recruiters look for when reviewing resumes.

Mirror the job description instead of listing responsibilities

Amanda's first suggestion is to tailor a resume according to the role instead of sending the same version for every application. She said applicants should show how their skills match the problems the company is trying to solve. "First up, mirror the job description. We want to see how your specific skills solve the problems that we're looking to fix."

She also advised candidates not to simply mention the work they handled in previous jobs. Instead, they should connect their experience directly to the qualifications mentioned in the job posting.

Amanda also recommended using measurable results wherever possible. "Don't just list your tasks—tie your experience directly to the role's qualifications."

"And here's a pro tip: use data. Instead of saying you 'led a team,' tell us you 'managed a team of 10 to increase operating efficiency by 20%.' Numbers tell a story that words cannot," she added.

According to her, numbers help recruiters quickly understand the scale and impact of a candidate's work.

Make the minimum qualifications easy to find

The second tip focuses on the minimum qualifications listed in a job description. Amanda described these as the basic requirements that applicants must meet before they can be considered for a role. "Next up, let's talk minimum qualifications. These are the non-negotiables for the role."

She advised candidates to carefully review these requirements before applying and make sure their resumes clearly show that they meet them. "Before you hit apply, make sure that your resume clearly demonstrates that you meet these requirements."

Amanda also said recruiters should not have to search through a resume to identify relevant experience. "If we have to hunt for your experience, we might miss it. So make it obvious and ensure that your resume clearly aligns to the minimum qualifications of the role that you're applying for."

Keep your resume short and easy to read

Amanda's final piece of advice is to avoid adding unnecessary information. Although Google does not enforce a strict page limit, she said resumes should stay focused and easy to read. "Third, be a minimalist. While Google doesn't have a strict page limit, being clear and succinct is key."

She explained that recruiters review a large number of applications, so a resume that gets to the point is often easier to assess. "We review a lot of applications at Google, so a resume that's easy to follow and gets straight to the point is always a winner."

Amanda summed it up by encouraging candidates to think of their resume as a summary of their best work rather than a complete career history. "Think of it as your professional highlight reel, rather than your entire autobiography."

She ended the video by thanking viewers and invited people to leave questions about Google's hiring process in the comments. The tips were shared in a video published by Life at Google featuring Amanda, a recruiter from Google's Dublin office in Ireland.
