Team India have been regular visitors in Zimbabwe for years on end, and with each tour, a fresh batch has had the pleasure of entering international cricket. The nation has proven to be an ideal launchpad to experience and settle into the new environment after the hard grind in the domestic circuit, and the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Emerging speedster Ashok Sharma joins the long list of players to make their T20I debut in Zimbabwe after being awarded his Team India cap ahead of the 2026 series opener at the Harare Sports Club on Thursday, July 23. The Gujarat Titans (GT) bowler had earned his maiden call-up after his impressive debut IPL season, a few months ago.
On that note, let us take a look at some of the Indian players who made their T20I debut in Zimbabwe before the 2026 tour.
A career that involved a T20 World Cup trophy, leadership across 50 matches, and over 4000 runs all began at the Harare Sports Club, just over 16 years ago. Virat Kohli, after making his international debut in 2008 through ODIs, grew from strength to strength, and became part of Team India's squad for the Zimbabwe tour after a dismal T20 World Cup 2010 performance in the Caribbean.
Virat Kohli, who had a decent IPL 2010, crossing the 300-run mark for a season for the first time, made his debut in the series opener under Suresh Raina's captaincy. He was slotted at No.5 in his very first outing, and scored an unbeaten cameo of 26 runs off 21 deliveries to help India chase down the 112-run target.
It proved to be his only outing in the tour as he did not get the chance to bat in the next match as India clinched the series 2-0. It was also his only set of matches in the country, as he was not a part of subsequent tours as an established senior player.
KL Rahul made his international debut during the tour of Zimbabwe in 2016, which began with the ODIs. He made a memorable first impression by scoring a hundred, and became the first Indian batter to record a ton on ODI debut. A week later, on June 18, 2016, he was awarded his T20I cap as well, making him an all-format player.
On his T20I debut, however, KL Rahul was trapped LBW for a golden duck, as India suffered a shocking two-run loss. The poor start did not affect the wicket-keeper batter as he scored a match-winning 40 in a 10-wicket success, before another brief cameo in the series finale.
The No. 2-ranked T20I batter's international journey began in Zimbabwe in Team India's previous tour in 2024. The Men in Blue had the opportunity to test some new talent immediately after their T20 World Cup 2024 success.
Abhishek Sharma, after a solid IPL 2024 season with the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) where they played the final, was named in the Shubman Gill-led squad. Making his debut straightaway in the series opener of the five-match affair, the southpaw was dismissed for a duck.
However, he made amends and showcased his potential at the international level with a stunning hundred, the second-fastest by an Indian in history, coming off 37 balls. The explosive opening batter has been on the rise since then, and returns to Zimbabwe in 2026 as well as the first-choice opener.
One of the most prominent spinners in India's history, R Ashwin, began his T20I career in Zimbabwe, straight after being part of the Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) title-winning squad in IPL 2010.
The off-spinner had a memorable T20I debut, just a week after making his ODI debut on Zimbabwe soil as well. In his very first outing, he made an instant impression, bowling an economical spell of 1-24 off his four overs, including the wicket of veteran wicket-keeper Tatenda Taibu.
Team India kick-started the T20I series of the 2015 tour of Zimbabwe with a dominant 54-run win. In the second and the final contest, Sanju Samson made his debut, but it was far from a memorable one. Featuring in the middle order, as opposed to the top-order role he has evolved to, the right-handed batter scored a sluggish 24-ball 19, as India stumbled while chasing a 146-run target.
Team India eventually fell short by 10 runs to record their first-ever T20I loss to Zimbabwe. The result and performance also had an impact on Samson's career, as he had to wait for five years for his next opportunity in T20I cricket.
Sanju Samson returned to Zimbabwe for a T20I series after nine years during the 2024 tour, where he scored 70 runs in two outings. He was close to touring Zimbabwe for a third time, but was dropped right before the 2026 T20Is on the back of his poor string of scores in the preceding tours of Ireland and England.
