Madurai district police have arrested one person and seized 5.5 kg of ganja in Melur on Sunday.

A statement said that a special team of police conducted a surprise check at Kumar Nagar based on specific intelligence input that some people were selling ganja in the area.

Even as the police barged into the area for a search, some people fled the scene on noticing them. However, the police gave a chase and managed to nab one G. Abinesh (22) of Chokkampatti near Melur.

The police seized 5.5 kg of ganja, an electronic weighing machine, two knives and a two-wheeler from him.

The police booked him under the provisions of Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and Arms Act.

Even as the accused was being interrogated, the police have launched a manhunt for the missing persons.
