The Telangana Food Safety Department has seized 850 kg of ghee over suspicion of adulteration and cream during a special enforcement drive in the Core Urban Region (CURE) region as part of a two-phase crackdown conducted across the State. The drive was carried out in coordination with the Hyderabad City Police on July 14 and 15.

In the CURE region, the officials inspected 14 establishments and collected 15 samples of ghee and cream for laboratory analysis. Besides the seizure, another 60 kg of suspected contaminated ghee and cream was discarded on the spot.

According to the department, inspections revealed instances where some licensed as well as unregulated establishments were suspected of selling ghee adulterated with vegetable fats such as palm oil, vanaspati and coconut oil. The department said that under the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, ghee must contain at least 99.5% milk fat and not more than 0.5% moisture.

During inspections in districts across the State, the Food Safety Officers inspected 65 establishments and collected 91 samples of ghee and cream for laboratory analysis. They also issued notices to five food business operators for suspected violations.
