Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) woman councillor Monu Kukkar was unanimously elected president of the Arniwala Nagar Panchayat (reserve for women) in the Jalalabad Assembly segment of Fazilka district on Tuesday.

During the election, Shiv Kumar Bhalla and Kulwant Kaur, both AAP councillors, were elected vice-presidents of the Nagar Panchayat.

In the recently held civic elections, AAP secured six of the 11 wards, while the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) won four wards and the Congress one. The BJP failed to win any seat.

Jalalabad MLA Jagdeep Goldy Kamboj, who was present during the election process, congratulated the newly elected office-bearers and said the first major project would be the reconstruction of all roads in the Arniwala sub-tehsil at an estimated cost of Rs 8 crore. He said the roads had been damaged during the laying of the sewerage network.

The MLA added that another priority would be the renovation of the dilapidated village pond at an estimated cost of Rs 2.5 crore. Kamboj also said the elections for the posts of president and vice-president of the Jalalabad Municipal Council were likely to be held within the next couple of days.
