WWE Superstar Shinsuke Nakamura was in his home country of Japan recently. During his trip, he made a personal visit to another Japanese wrestling legend.
Yoshihiro Takayama had suffered a career-ending injury on May 4, 2017. He was competing at a DDT Pro-Wrestling event in Osaka in a six-man tag team match, and performed a Sunset Flip that went wrong. Doctors diagnosed him with a cervical spinal cord injury due to degenerative cervical spondylosis, which left his spinal cord severely damaged, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down.
A recent report from Fightful stated that Takayama's manager had announced that he had lately been feeling a tingling sensation in his legs. Shinsuke Nakamura, who was in Japan, paid a visit to Yoshihiro Takayama earlier this month. Takayama revealed the meeting on his official blog on July 8 and also on X/Twitter. The two Japanese wrestling legends reunited nearly two decades after first facing each other.
Despite the severity of his condition, Takayama has continued rehabilitation and remains active in the wrestling community through blog updates and occasional visits from friends and colleagues. His wife, Natsuko, frequently shares updates on his progress.
Former IWGP Heavyweight Champion Tadao Yasuda was found dead in his home earlier this year, in February.
Yasuda was a former mixed martial arts artist and started his pro wrestling career in the 90s. He trained in MMA after being sent to the United States by Antonio Inoki, after which he returned to Japan and continued wrestling. He retired from the ring in 2011.
After New Japan Pro-Wrestling paid respect to him on their website, Shinsuke Nakamura also paid a glowing tribute to the Japanese wrestling legend on X/Twitter.
Shinsuke Nakamura last held the WWE United States Championship in late 2024. He held the title for 93 days before dropping it back to LA Knight. It remains to be seen what is next for the Japanese star in the Stamford-based promotion.
