The members of All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) and Students Federation of India (SFI) staged protests in Thoothukudi on Friday, in support of students protesting in New Delhi, demanding the abolition of NEET and the resignation of Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in the examination.

An AIDWA led sit-in protest was held in front of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar statue on Thoothukudi-Palayamkottai Road. The demonstration was led by District secretary Janaki.

Police personnel who arrived at the protest spot informed the protestors that permission had not been granted for the demonstration and asked them to disperse. As they refused to do so, the police detained them, causing brief tension in the area.

Meanwhile, SFI staged a demonstration in front of V.O. Chidambaranar College. A large number of students took part in the protest.
