The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has rejected the Justice (Retd.) Gita Mittal-led panel’s recommendation to have five Sportspersons of Outstanding Merit (SOM) in the 15-member Executive Committee (EC).
At the Extraordinary General Meeting held in New Delhi on Sunday to ratify amendments to the AITA constitution to bring it in line with the National Sports Governance Act, members voted to have two SOMs, the minimum number mandated by the Act.
According to the press release issued on Sunday, the AITA has also chosen to have four women in the EC as against Justice Mittal’s proposal of five.
The EC is set to include a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer and two joint-secretaries (one post reserved for woman) compared to the administrator’s amendment that suggested two vice-presidents and just one joint-secretary.
Every affiliated State association will be represented by two delegates in the General Body, giving them two votes each.
Justice Mittal had proposed one vote for each State association.
A decision to whether cap the upper age-limit of EC members to 70 or increase it to 75 is still awaited.
Hearing on August 14
The Delhi High Court will hear the matter next on August 14, with September 30 being the deadline for holding fresh elections under the new constitution.
