In a social media post on Tuesday, Ms. Hassan said she felt “happy” after learning that the police have taken action against those responsible for defaming women through social media platforms.

She was referring to two cases in which the police had acted against such persons, including the arrest of a YouTuber, Rajan Joseph from Kochi, on Saturday (July 11) night by the Adoor police for allegedly posting defamatory content against Congress leader and Pathanamthitta district panchayat member Sreenadevi Kunjamma.

The Palarivattom police had earlier informed Ms. Hassan that they could register a case on the complaint filed by her against fellow actors. The police said they could not register an FIR as the allegations pertain to defamation alone.

She said that Article 14 of the Constitution guaranteed that the State shall not deny to any person “equality before the law” or the “equal protection of the laws” within the territory of India. This establishes equal legal standing for men and women, she said.
