After completing his MBA, Ankur Warikoo was shortlisted for consulting roles, but the process did not go smoothly.
Success stories often highlight the destination, but Ankur Warikoo's latest reflection focuses on the uncertainty that came before it. The entrepreneur and content creator recently looked back on the five-year period that transformed his career, revealing how he went from earning just Rs 14,746 a month at his first job to drawing an annual salary of Rs 33 lakh by the age of 29.

Sharing his journey on social media, Warikoo credited the transformation not to luck alone, but to taking calculated risks, embracing opportunities, and working hard whenever someone believed in his potential.

Ankur Warikoo's career began after dropping out of a PhD

Warikoo revealed that he got his first job at the age of 24 with a monthly salary of Rs 14,746. Before that, he had dropped out of his PhD programme in the United States and returned to India without a clear career plan.

"I dropped out of my PhD in the US and came back to India. With no idea what was next," he wrote.

After spending 45 days attending walk-in interviews and responding to newspaper advertisements, he finally landed a job. According to Warikoo, the role was completely unfamiliar. He admitted he "knew nothing" about the work, but the company still hired him because they believed he was willing to learn. He said he responded by working hard to justify that faith.

Why an MBA became the turning point

While working, Warikoo noticed that many of his colleagues held MBAs and had a much stronger grasp of management concepts. That observation convinced him that pursuing an MBA could help him transition from a background in Physics into management.

He soon discovered the Indian School of Business (ISB), which offered a one-year MBA programme. However, enrolling meant taking what he described as a "mega loan," the first such loan anyone in his family had ever taken. Before making the decision, Warikoo said he asked himself one practical question.

He wondered whether graduating from ISB would help him secure a job paying at least Rs 35,000 a month, enough to cover a Rs 20,000 monthly loan repayment while maintaining the Rs 15,000 income level he was already earning. "The data suggested yes," he recalled, and that gave him the confidence to move forward.

From interview setbacks to a high-paying consulting role

After completing his MBA, Warikoo was shortlisted for consulting roles, but the process did not go smoothly.
He shared that he was eliminated in the first round of interviews at a company. At another company, he cleared the first round but struggled in the second. Instead of ending there, the firm gave him another opportunity to interview with the managing director.

"I gave it everything," Warikoo wrote. The effort paid off. He secured one of the top jobs offered during campus placements with an annual salary of Rs 12 lakh.

From Rs 3 lakh to Rs 33 lakh in five years

Warikoo said his career accelerated quickly after joining. Within a year and a half, he received what he described as the fastest promotion in the firm's history at the time, and his salary doubled. By the time he left the company in 2009, he was earning Rs 33 lakh per year.

Looking back, he noted that he had started at just Rs 3 lakh annually five years earlier, making the growth feel "wild." Reflecting on his journey, Warikoo said the biggest lesson was that his career progressed because people were willing to take a chance on him. He believes his responsibility was simple: remain grateful for those opportunities and work hard enough to justify the trust others placed in him.

"As I reflect upon this, I realised that this only happened because people bet on me," he wrote. Warikoo ended his post with a message for anyone facing uncertainty in their own career: "If people take a bet on you, bet on the same thing. Yourself!"
