Argentina scored three goals in less than 14 minutes to complete a comeback 3-2 win against Egypt and qualify for the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Messi got the comeback going as he set up a header for Cristian Romero in the 79th minute. He then struck a goal of his own four minutes later, his eighth in this tournament, to get Argentina level at 2-2.

The defending champion then struck in the injury time of the second half to clinch the fixture before it got to extra-time. Lautaro Martinez collected a pass on the right wing, went up the pitch and laid a cross for Enzo Fernandez to seal the victory.

An Argentina win seemed the last outcome when Mostafa Ziko fired Egypt to a 2-0 lead in the 67th minute. The forward had scored in the 58th minute as well but saw it ruled out for a foul in the lead-up.

Yasser Ibrahim had fired the opener for Egypt in the 15th minute, getting to a cross in the penalty box and beating Emiliano Martinez from close range. Argentina would have been level at half-time had Messi not missed a penalty in the 21st minute.
