Arnav Paparkar became the first Indian to qualify for the quarterfinals of Junior Wimbledon in 36 years with victory in the third round on Wednesday, June 8.
The 18-year-old brushed past Japan’s Ryo Tabata in straight sets, winning 6-2, 6-1 in 52 minutes.
He becomes the first Indian to reach the final eight since Leander Paes, who reached the quarterfinals on his way to a famous victory in 1990. Paes is one of only three Indians to win the junior title, along with Ramanathan Krishnan and Ramesh Krishnan.
A day prior, Paparkar had earned a shock win by defeating world No. 3 Keaton Hance in straight sets.
He will now face either Jordan Lee or Tanishk Konduri, both from USA, in the quarters.
