India’s Anand Singh breached the 80m barrier for the first time in his career, producing a personal-best throw of 80.57m to win the men’s javelin gold medal at the Asian U23 Athletics Championships 2026 in Ordos, China, on Sunday.
Competing in his first international competition, the 22-year-old improved his previous best of 77.68m by 2.89m to become the latest Indian javelin thrower to enter the 80m club.
Anand had recorded his earlier lifetime best at the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar on June 28, where he finished fourth behind Rohit Yadav, Yashvir Singh and Sachin Yadav. His 77.68m effort had come in the sixth and final round of the competition.
The Uttar Pradesh athlete had also finished runner-up at the Indian Open Throws Competition in Patiala in March with an effort of 76.94m.
India’s women’s 4x400m relay team added another gold later in the evening, clocking 3:33.62 in the final.
Shravani Sachin Sangle gave the quartet a strong start before Sandramol Sabu delivered a solid second leg, pulling clear of her Chinese rival over the closing 100m. Pravallika Narimalla and Nofisa Khatun then protected India’s advantage to complete a commanding victory.
China finished second in 3:35.14, while Kazakhstan took bronze in 3:37.65. India’s winning time was only 0.81 seconds slower than the senior national team’s season-best mark of 3:32.81.
