The Guindy police arrested a housekeeper, a native of Assam, for smuggling heroin to the city on Saturday. The police are also searching for three more suspects.
The police said a parcel had arrived at a courier office in the Guindy Industrial Estate, which appeared to be suspicious, during the sorting process. The courier company employees alerted the Guindy police who upon opening the parcel, found heroin.
Acting on the police instructions, the courier company contacted the recipient listed on the parcel named Rajib Hussain and asked him to come to Guindy to collect it. As he stepped out after collecting the parcel, a police team led by Inspector Michael Iruthayaraj arrested Rajib Hussain.
During interrogation, he revealed that he had been living in the Navalur suburb in the IT corridor for six years and working in housekeeping in a private company. As he had wanted to earn more money, he contacted his friend, Shafiqul Aslam from Assam, stating that his monthly salary of ₹12,000 barely covered his expenses, leaving little to send home.
Based on his advice that heroin could be sold at high profit, Rajib Hussain informed his friends Saithul Islam and Parithul Hussain, who joined him. Accordingly, a few months ago, the trio sent ₹45,000 to Shafiqul Aslam and purchased heroin via courier. They sold the consignment for ₹1 lakh and divided the proceeds among themselves.
Subsequently, about a week ago, the three of them sent ₹64,000 to Shafiqul Aslam. He informed them that he would send the shipment in two separate parcels over a span of a few days. He then dispatched the first parcel containing 13 grams of heroin to the city via courier.
The police are searching for three suspects who are on the run.
