Alexander Zverev effortlessly avoided the troublesome challenge posed by the in-form Taylor Fritz to storm into his maiden Wimbledon semi-final on Wednesday. With his recent success, the 2026 Roland Garros champion became just the fifth German in the Open Era to reach the last four stage at the All England Club.

The World No. 3 was expected to face an exacting challenge against Fritz, an opponent he hadn't beaten since the Rome Masters quarter-finals in May 2024. However, Zverev completely flipped the script and cruised to a clinical 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 win in an hour and 59 minutes.

Before his newfound success, Zverev had never managed to go past the fourth round once in his nine appearances at SW19. He will square off against spirited Arthur Fery, who has silently written his fairytale story in London. The Frenchman left World No. 10 Flavio Cobolli jolted and marked his dominance by inflicting a bagel in his emphatic 6-4, 7-6(4), 6-0 win.

While Zverev will square off against Fery at one end, the other semi-final fixture is a crowd-pleaser. In front of a jam-packed crowd, World No. 1 and defending champion Jannik Sinner will face 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. Fans weighed in on the two semi-final clashes and wondered how Alexander Zverev made his way to the last-four stage.

A user pointed out Carlos Alcaraz's absence left a window of opportunity for the German to capitalise on. While some users felt Zverev setting up the semi-final clash against Fery could be the "worst ATP season."

If Alexander Zverev outlasts Arthur Fery in the semi-final, he will go past Carlos Alcaraz to the second spot in the world rankings for the first time since May 2025. After ensuring his first semi-final appearance at Wimbledon, Zverev has already set his sights on the final.

But before returning to face Fery, Zverev expressed his delight about trouncing Fritz, an opponent he hadn't beaten in the last two years.

If Alexander Zverev prevails over Fery on Friday, he will either face Jannik Sinner or Novak Djokovic for the second Grand Slam title of his career.
