The WWE United States Championship picture on Friday Night SmackDown became more volatile during tonight's episode. Baron Corbin made a surprise return to the blue brand, completely derailing a high-stakes match between United States Champion Trick Williams and his long-time rival, Carmelo Hayes. The former King of the Ring immediately inserted himself into the title scene by wiping out both competitors.
The non-title bout between Williams and Hayes began with heavy physical exchanges. Williams utilized his size advantage early on, tossing Hayes across the ring and applying a heavy shoulder tackle. Hayes fought back using his speed, executing a springboard reverse DDT and a springboard flying clothesline
The momentum shifted repeatedly in the final moments. Williams scored near falls with a jumping neckbreaker and multiple leg lariats. Melo responded by shoving Williams off the top rope and landing a big Frog Splash, followed by his signature Dirty Diana. The action spilled outside, where Hayes sent Williams crashing into musician Lil Yachty at ringside.
Back in the ring, Hayes hit the First 48 and scaled the turnbuckle, but Corbin rushed the ring to stop him. The referee immediately called for a disqualification, awarding Carmelo Hayes the victory.
The former WWE United States Champion did not stop his assault after the bell. The returning star forcefully threw Williams into the steel ring post and then dropped the champ with End of Days.
Melo tried to capitalize or escape, but Corbin quickly caught him and delivered a second End of Days.
The segment concluded with a clear message regarding the future of the WWE United States Championship. Corbin picked up the title belt and posed over the fallen bodies of both Williams and Hayes. He then walked away with the gold, confirming his intentions to pursue the championship.
Corbin returned to the company after a stint on the independent circuit and MLW, where he wrestled under the name Bishop Dyer following his WWE release in late 2024. He holds a long-standing rivalry with Carmelo Hayes dating back to their intense championship battles in NXT.
It will be interesting to see what plans Triple H and his creative team have in store for the 41-year-old star.
