After India's win in the first ODI against England, cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra has lauded Shubman Gill for playing a game-defining knock. He expressed hope that the Indian skipper's good form with the bat continues, highlighting that it would help him as a leader as well.
India bowled out England for 258 in Birmingham on Tuesday, July 14. Gill scored 80 runs off 75 balls in the chase as the Men in Blue achieved the target with six wickets and 28 balls to spare.
In a video shared on his YouTube channel, 'Aakash Chopra,' the former India batter noted that Gill's form is a great sign for the visitors.
Chopra added that Gill's cause as a skipper would benefit with consistent performances with the bat.
Shubman Gill struck 11 fours and a six during his 80-run knock. He eventually retired hurt due to either an injury or cramps in his leg.
In the same video, Aakash Chopra praised Shubman Gill for captaining well at the start of the England innings.
While acknowledging that Gill seemed short of ideas when the partnership between Joe Root and Liam Dawson was flourishing, the analyst praised the 26-year-old for introducing Axar Patel to close out the innings before playing a match-winning knock.
Joe Root (76 off 76) and Liam Dawson (68 off 83) stitched together a 121-run partnership after England were reduced to 107/6. Axar Patel (4/62 in 9.5 overs) then picked up the last four wickets to ensure that India didn't have to chase a more challenging target.
