The Phase XI police today arrested Punjab Police constable Gurpinder Singh and a private person, Gurmeet Singh, for stalking and molesting a Sector 68 girl on the night of July 3 and trying to run over the girl’s brother when he resisted their move.
The duo had allegedly chased the siblings’ car to their residential society in Sector 68 before fleeing from the spot. The police had registered a case of stalking, molesting and rash driving against the duo on the basis of the statement of the girl’s brother Manpreet Singh.
Chandigarh Tribune had highlighted the incident prominently on July 6. The video of the incident also went viral after which the Punjab Women’s Commission also took strict note of the incident and sought a report from the Mohali police on July 9.
Inspector Aman Baidwan, Phase XI SHO, confirmed the arrest and said that the constable is based in Bathinda and the details of his posting have been sought from the SSP. The identity of the other suspect is being verified. The cop did not have any weapon with him at the time of the incident, but a uniform was hanging in the vehicle. The victim girl has not recorded her statement yet.
Manpreet, a resident of Shri Guru Har Sahai Society in Sector 68, had complained to the police that around five SUV-borne youths tried to molest his sister and attempted to run him over while the siblings were returning from the market on July 3.
The complainant also alleged that the SUV belonged to a Bathinda-based politician and that a gunman was inside the vehicle with a police uniform hanging behind the seat. Manpreet also alleged that the SUV started following him and his sister while they were returning home.
Manpreet said he managed to drive away with his sister, but the assailants continued to chase them. He alleged that the driver repeatedly honked and flashed the vehicle’s headlights in an apparent attempt to force them to stop.
According to the complaint, when they reached their society, two relatives present there tried to stop the SUV. However, the driver sped towards them and attempted to run them over.
