The Royal Belgian Football Federation on Friday announced Mark van Bommel as the men’s team head coach, replacing Rudi Garcia, who left the role after the recently concluded FIFA World Cup.
The former Dutch international will take charge of the team starting August be hold the position till the UEFA Euro 2028.
“Success is never guaranteed, but hard work, honesty and commitment are. We will give everything to help this team improve every day and make the Belgian people proud. I am looking forward to meeting the players, the staff and the supporters, and beginning this new chapter together,” van Bommel said in a statement released by the association.
He takes charge of the team after it reached the quarterfinals at the World Cup, losing 2-1 to eventual champion Spain.
Along with van Bommel, Boudewijn Zenden, Maarten Martens and Reinier Robbemond will take up roles as assistant coaches with the Belgian national team.
As a coach, van Bommel has managed PSV Eindhoven, VfL Wolfsburg and Royal Antwerp FC but this will be his maiden managerial stint in international football. His playing career was spread across clubs from Spain, Germany and Italy. He also made 79 appearances for the Netherlands national side and was part of the squad that reached the final of the FIFA World Cup in 2010.
