The much awaited 288-km Bengaluru Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) project is in its final stages, with four of its six packages already completed and the remaining two expected to be finished by September and November 2026.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has also confirmed that the proposed six-lane expansion from Oblapura to Kunigal (Phase-I) and Kunigal to S. Mudugadapallu has been appraised by the Public Private Partnership Appraisal Committee (PPPAC), paving the way for the next phase of the project.
The update was provided by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in a written reply to an unstarred question raised by member Ajay Maken in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday (July 22).
According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the STRR spans approximately 288 km, including 243 km in Karnataka and 45 km in Tamil Nadu, and has been divided into six packages for execution. The project carries a total capital cost of ₹14,655 crore.
Among the completed sections are the 42-km Dobbspet-Doddballapur Bypass stretch of NH-648 and the 38-km Doddballapur-Hoskote section of NH-648. The Dobbspet-Doddballapur package has achieved 100% completion, while the Doddballapur-Hoskote section has been completed despite recording 99.2% physical progress in the official status report.
Construction is also nearing completion on the remaining stretches, according to the Minister. The 21-km Greenfield highway from the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border, forming part of NH-648, has reached nearly 95% physical progress and is scheduled for completion by November 2026. Meanwhile, the 35.76-km Tamil Nadu portion of the STRR on NH-948 has achieved over 91% progress and is expected to be completed by September 2026. An overlapping 7-km portion integrated with the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway has already been completed.
Responding to queries by Mr. Maken on pending approvals, the Ministry said that the proposals for constructing the six-lane STRR from Oblapura in Nelamangala taluk to Kunigal (Phase-I) and from Kunigal to S. Mudugadapallu in Hosur taluk under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) have been appraised by the PPP Appraisal Committee.
The Centre further stated that apart from the proposed six-lane STRR project, no other National Highway project in Karnataka remains pending after appraisal by the Public Investment Board, PPP Appraisal Committee or Standing Finance Committee. It noted that highway development is an ongoing process, with projects taken up based on detailed project reports, traffic demand, connectivity requirements, PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan priorities, and statutory clearances.
The STRR project launched in 2013 to connect industrial towns surrounding Bengaluru, including Dobbspet, Doddballapur, Devanahalli, Sulibele, Hoskote, Anekal, Kanakapura, Ramanagara, and Magadi, has faced delays for various reasons.
The Ministry also released details of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) projects sanctioned in Karnataka during the last three years. Six projects with a combined sanctioned cost of ₹6,917.37 crore have been approved, while expenditure incurred so far stands at ₹1,744.58 crore. These include four packages of the Belagavi-Hungund-Raichur highway project, the Bellary Bypass on NH-150A and additional works on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Access Controlled Highway.
