Seeking proper lighting at the public park in Bharathi Nagar near Sarah Tucker College, a group of residents from this area in ward 41 of the Tirunelveli Corporation submitted petition to Deputy Mayor K.R. Raju on Tuesday during the weekly grievances redress meeting.

The petitioners said almost all the lights fitted in the park, used by a few hundred people everyday for the morning and evening stroll and by children, had remained non-functional for past several weeks to discourage the visitors to stay away from this spot. Since four street light poles had already been installed at as many vantage points of this park, the Corporation should fit solar-powered LED light panels on these poles to maintain at least minimum light after the dusk, considering the safety of the visitors.

Moreover, the damaged seats of the park should also either be repaired or replaced by stainless steel seats, the petitioners said.

Another major grievance of the Bharathi Nagar residents is the erratic drinking water supply that has badly affected normal life of the 250-odd families of Bharathi Nagar, Bharathi Nagar Extension and Sivapuram. The residents of these areas, who were getting drinking water on alternate days from LKS Nagar overhead tank, were struggling to meet even regular needs because of poor supply.

“Since water is released into the distribution system even before the water level in the LKS Nagar overhead tank reaches the halfway mark, the pressure is very low, badly affecting drinking water supply to residents in tail-end areas. To make matters worse, even the 400-feet-deep borewells in houses have gone dry after the harsh summer. Considering this situation, the Corporation should take appropriate steps to ensure sufficient drinking water supply,” said S. Durairaj, president of Bharathi Nagar Welfare Association.

Resident of Manipuram in ward 28 in Tirunelveli Town A. Isaivani submitted a petition seeking the cleaning of the clogged drainage channel in their area as it is creating nauseating condition for the past several months after the sanitary workers refused to remove the blocks.

“The stagnant sewage in this channel is a major breeding ground for mosquitoes. The Corporation workers, who threaten to seal houses and commercial buildings for not eliminating mosquito breeding grounds on their premises, refuse to clear the blockage in the channel. Hence, the City Health Officer should inspect the spot and take immediate action,” Ms. Isaivani said who had attached photographs showing the condition of the drainage channel along with her petition.

Another petition was submitted seeking the construction of a culvert at Veeramanickapuram to drain the rainwater.
