The newly appointed BJP district president (urban), Sunil Moudgil, is expected to formally assume charge later this week in the presence of Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon. An RSS worker since his youth, Moudgil has been associated with the BJP for nearly four decades.

Speaking to The Tribune about his new role and the challenges ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, Moudgil said his foremost priority as the district president would be to address the shortcomings within the organisation.

“My objective is to bring all party workers together, assign responsibilities to those who deserve them, and work in a united manner for the party as well as the people of Punjab,” he said.

Asked whether the task would be challenging with the Assembly elections drawing closer, Moudgil said the BJP was in a strong position in Punjab.

“The recent visits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah reflect the party’s developmental vision for Punjab. The people of the state have also shown warmth and support towards the BJP. We are fully confident that the BJP will form the government in Punjab,” he said.

Meanwhile, several local BJP leaders have welcomed the change in the district leadership.

“We expect Moudgil to lead the organisation in a fair and transparent manner. He believes in hard work and inclusiveness. The party cadre is hopeful that his team will comprise dedicated BJP workers who believe in equality and will carry along those who have worked tirelessly for the party. As per the party’s organisational practice, district presidents are changed every three years. We had been hoping for the past decade that Moudgil would be appointed district president. He is approachable, impartial and widely respected among party workers,” said a local BJP leader who has been associated with Moudgil for more than a decade.
