The Coimbatore Corporation has installed a boom barrier integrated with a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-based vehicle access control system at the Vellalore dump yard to regulate the movement of waste transport vehicles and strengthen security.
The ₹10-lakh system is expected to be commissioned on a trial basis shortly. Only authorised vehicles fitted with RFID tags will be allowed to enter the facility through the boom barrier. The RFID reader will automatically identify the tagged vehicles, record their entry and exit, and permit access only to authorised vehicles.
Officials said the vehicle movement data will be transmitted to the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) for real-time monitoring. Mobile-based access will also be provided to authorised officials to monitor vehicle movement and access records remotely.
The Corporation has closed all other access points to the dump yard, making the entrance from Chetipalayam Road the only authorised entry and exit. Officials said the move would prevent unauthorised vehicles from entering the facility.
The entrance was earlier monitored manually by security personnel. However, officials said the RFID-enabled access control system would enhance security, improve operational efficiency, reduce manual intervention, and maintain a digital record of all vehicle movements at the facility.
According to officials, the system will also help resolve allegations that waste not collected by the Coimbatore Corporation was being brought to the Vellalore dump yard for disposal.
