Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has said she continues to have "cordial relations" with US President Donald Trump despite recent tensions between the two leaders.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Turkey, Meloni sought to play down the disagreement, which began after Trump claimed she had "begged" him for a photograph during the G7 summit in France. Meloni rejected the allegation, and the controversy reportedly led Italy's foreign minister to cancel a planned visit to the United States.

Trump later described Meloni as a "nice person", but said their relationship had been affected by Italy's refusal to support US military operations against Iran.

Responding to the recent exchanges, Meloni stressed that diplomatic ties between countries should not depend on individual leaders. "These relationships don't begin or end because of who happens to be in power at a particular moment," she said, adding, "Foreign policy is more complex than that." Italy remains a key US ally within NATO despite the recent differences.
