Ballon d'Or have stated that a footballer can win the prestigious award without winning a team trophy. They claim that the player's contribution on the pitch matters more than team trophies.

In a statement published by the Ballon d'Or, they listed the players who have won the Ballon d'Or despite not winning a team trophy in the season. However, it has not happened often, and only six players have managed to do it in history.

The top two players in the running for the prestigious award this year without a team trophy this season are Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.

Luis Figo believes Kylian Mbappe is the frontrunner for the prestigious this year. He claimed that the Frenchman had a great season with Real Madrid and his FIFA World Cup display made it better. He said:

Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, Rodri and Ousmane Dembele are the other names listed by most pundits and fans. Michael Olise and Harry Kane are also in the running after their stellar season with Bayern Munich and their performances at the FIFA World Cup for their respective countries, until both lost in the semifinals.
