Carson Hocevar will lead the field to green for Sunday's Brickyard 400 after producing the fastest lap in qualifying at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Spire Motorsports driver secured his second pole of the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season and the third of his Cup career, earning a front-row lockout alongside teammate Daniel Suarez.
The pole continues an impressive run of form for Hocevar. Although he finished only 13th at North Wilkesboro last weekend, the result did not reflect his pace. Indianapolis has also been one of his stronger tracks, with finishes of 12th as a rookie and 10th last season.
After climbing from the No. 77 Chevrolet, an elated Carson Hocevar admitted the achievement had not fully sunk in:
Qualifying for the 2026 Brickyard 400 unfolded dramatically across the 39-car field, with the provisional pole changing hands several times. Corey Heim's return in the No. 67 23XI Racing Toyota set the first benchmark after recording a 48.529-second lap at 185.456 mph as the third driver on track. Twelve drivers later, Spire Motorsports veteran Michael McDowell edged ahead before Tyler Reddick immediately improved the mark with a 48.367-second lap at 186.077 mph.
Reddick's 45 23XI Toyota remained on top until the closing stages, when Daniel Suarez delivered a 48.288-second lap at 186.382 mph as the 32nd driver to qualify, briefly putting Spire Motorsports on provisional pole. Hocevar, running as the second-last driver of the session, watched both teammates produce laps in the 48-second range. Eventually, his 48.232-second lap at 186.598 mph secured pole.
The final challenge came from Denny Hamlin, who was the last driver to qualify. He had already edged Carson Hocevar for pole in his hometown at Michigan by mere hundredths of a second earlier this season, and he seemed capable of doing something similar at Indianapolis.
Hamlin carried strong momentum through most of the lap and was just four hundredths slower entering Turn 4. However, a late braking moment forced him wide exiting the corner, costing valuable time as he settled for a 48.430-second lap, leaving Hocevar on pole.
The 2026 Brickyard 400, scheduled at the iconic 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval, will run over 160 laps, with stage breaks at Laps 50, 100 and 160, after the green flag waves at 2:20 p.m. ET.
Asked what it would take to convert pole position into victory, Carson Hocevar joked that staying in front might be the biggest advantage around Indianapolis while also admitting he wanted to enjoy the moment.
After the interview concluded, Carson Hocevar climbed onto the pitlane railing and acknowledged the Indianapolis crowd, receiving loud cheers each time he turned toward the grandstands.
The No. 77 Spire Motorsports team has shown speed throughout the weekend. Hocevar posted a best practice lap of 49.281 seconds at 182.626 mph, while Christopher Bell topped the session at 183.512 mph, ahead of John Hunter Nemechek (183.180 mph) and Ty Gibbs (183.101 mph). Hocevar also ranked 10th in the 10-lap average, suggesting he also has the long-run pace needed to contend over the full 160-lap distance.
