Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Thursday called upon agitating youngsters to pursue their rights through democratic means, adding that the Congress party would continue to stand by them. He expressed confidence that the country would witness a new political culture and renewed hope under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership.

In a statement, Mr. Reddy alleged that a widening gap was emerging between the BJP-led Union government and the country’s youth due to rising unemployment, recurring examination paper leaks, uncertainty over students’ futures and the lack of adequate opportunities.

He claimed that the frustration among youth was increasingly reflected across the country and criticised the government for its handling of student and youth protests.

The Minister alleged that instead of listening to students and young people who were peacefully raising their demands, the Centre was resorting to repression. Efforts to silence dissent through arrests and threats were against democratic values and the spirit of the Constitution, he said.
