The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will look at the feasibility of building two more corridors — Kilambakkam to Chengalpattu and Assisi Nagar to Wimco Nagar.

The phase I network’s corridor from Wimco Nagar to Chennai Airport will be further extended with this new proposal. As such, the CMRL has planned a southern expansion of this corridor and prepared a detailed project report (DPR) for the 15.46-km stretch from Chennai Airport to Kilambakkam, as it links the new bus terminus. This DPR is currently being reviewed by the Centre for approval, after which the construction could begin.

According to CMRL officials, there are plans to extend the corridor further from Kilambakkam to Chengalpattu, covering a length of 26.9 km.

Additionally, the CMRL plans to link Wimco Nagar with Assisi Nagar in Madhavaram — a key station in corridor 5 of the phase II network (Madhavaram to Sholinganallur), creating another link between the phase I and phase II networks. Both these networks are now connected through stations such as Alandur, Kilpauk, Thousand Lights, Nandanam, Koyambedu, and Vadapalani. The length of the Assisi Nagar-Wimco Nagar corridor will be 11 km.

“Since we have the road space and width, both Kilambakkam-Chengalpattu and Assisi Nagar-Wimco Nagar corridors will be built as elevated stretches. We have floated bids for a consultant to prepare the DPRs for both corridors,” an official said.

The consultant is likely to be identified within three months, and the DPRs may be completed within 4 to 5 months. The cost estimate to prepare the DPR is nearly ₹2 crore, the officials said.

The Comprehensive Mobility Plan states that the Airport-Chengalpattu and the Assisi Nagar-Wimco Nagar corridors are projected to reach Peak Hour Peak Direction Traffic of 12,471 and 10,647, respectively, by 2048.
