Australia’s Big Bash League will break new ground in December, with Chennai set to host the competition’s first match outside Australia.

After months of speculation, the Melbourne Renegades’ clash with the Perth Scorchers on December 12 was confirmed at a special event at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday, attended by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.

The fixture will bring the BBL to the 38,000-capacity M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, with league officials hoping Chennai’s appetite for cricket translates into a packed Chepauk for the historic occasion.

The match will also occupy a carefully chosen window in the cricket calendar. Scheduled as an evening fixture in Australia, it will begin in the afternoon in India, shortly after the close of play on the fourth day of the Australia-New Zealand Test in Perth.

It is the BBL’s first step beyond home shores and into the world’s biggest cricket market.
