The police on Tuesday (July 14, 2026) arrested the chief warder and two warders of the Nagercoil jail after a remand prisoner died there under suspicious circumstances on July 12, 2026.

    Sabari Varman, 34, a differently abled resident of Eeththankaadu near Suchindram, was arrested on July 9, 2026 for allegedly possessing the banned gutka and remanded in custody. Backed by a few outfits, his family refused to receive his body and his wife demanded a due investigation.

    Superintendent of Police Stalin went to the prison and conducted an investigation. He questioned the warders and other prison officials. He assured the protesters that action would be taken on the basis of the post-mortem report and the findings of his investigation.

    Subsequently, Judicial Magistrate Sathyamurthy conducted an inquiry. The post-mortem revealed that the victim had sustained injuries at several places. Against this backdrop, chief warder Jegan, 47, and warders Sivakumar  and Thiruvudai Nambi were picked up for inquiry and then arrested.
