P.V. Sindhu began her China Open 2026 campaign with a three-game win over compatriot Unnati Hooda in Changzhou on Wednesday.
The World No. 15, who is coming off a win in the Japan Open, beat Hooda 21-14, 9-21, 21-10 in just under an hour. She will face fourth seed Chen Yu Fei of China, who defeated Natsuki Nidaira in the opening round on Tuesday.
In the men’s singles, Ayush Shetty stunned World No. 11 Alwi Farhan of Indonesia in three games in the first round.
The young Indian shuttler overcame the former Junior Champion 21-17, 5-21, 21-17 to book his place in the Round of 16. Shetty had lost to the Indonesian in the semifinal of the 2023 World Junior Championships.
It was a tough day at the office for the Indian doubles contingent against the Chinese. Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde lost 21-9, 21-16 to top-seeded pair Yan Zhe Feng and Dong Ping Huang.
Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto also lost in straight games (21-18, 21-18) to Xin Wa Guo and Fang Hui Chen.
Men’s doubles pair M. R. Arjun and Hariharan Amsakarunan conceded to fourth seeds Wei Keng Liang and Chang Wang.
India’s top seed in men’s singles, Lakshya Sen, will take on World No. 19 Yushi Tanaka later in the day
