Minister for Agriculture R. Vinoth on July 17 flagged off two buses on a circular route connecting Kumbakonam bus stand and Swamimalai.
According to an official release, while one bus will be operated via Mada Street, the other will be operated via Darasuram. The vehicle proceeding through Mada Street will take the route of the second bus reaching Swamimalai from Kumbakonam bus stand via Darasuram on its return from Swamimalai.
Similarly, the second bus plying through Darasuram will take the Mada Street route to reach Kumbakonam bus stand on its return journey from Swamimalai, the release added.
Already, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Kumbakonam Division, has introduced a circular bus route service in Thanjavur connecting the Ayyasamy Vandaiyar Memorial bus stand (Old Bus Stand) with the New Bus Stand on Tiruchi Road. However, the bus service has reportedly benefited only a section of commuters heading to the Thanjavur Government Medical College and Hospital from the New Bus Stand and back. A majority of the patients visiting the hospital still rely on autorickshaws, said Sethuraman, a social activist based in Thanjavur.
