A 13-year-old class 7 student allegedly attempted to end his life after being made to stand outside his classroom for an entire day over a minor act of mischief at a private school in west Bengaluru.
The incident occurred on Tuesday under the jurisdiction of the Jnanabharathi Police Station. The boy was rushed to a hospital by his family and is currently undergoing treatment. The police said his condition is stable and he is “out of danger”.
Acting on a complaint by the boy’s father, the Jnanabharathi police have registered an FIR under Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015 and Sections 115(2), 118(1) and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 against the administrative secretary, principal and a few teachers of St. Philomena Memorial School in Mariyappanapalya.
The parents alleged that the prolonged punishment caused severe emotional distress to the child. After returning home, the boy allegedly attempted to end life and was saved in the nick of time by his brother.
In the complaint, the complainant alleged that his son, a class 7 student studying under the Right to Education (RTE) quota, was beaten by the school’s administrative secretary, the principal and two to three teachers on Tuesday after they allegedly became angry with him for an unspecified reason.
The complaint further states that the child had repeatedly expressed reluctance to attend school over the past few days, alleging that he was being harassed by teachers, the principal, the school secretary and even other students’ parents. The complainant said he had been consoling his son and had promised to shift him to another school after the current academic year.
Manjushree, principal at St. Philomena’s Memorial School, said she was told by other teachers that the boy in question hit another boy, suspecting that his project work was stolen. “While students and the teacher tried to stop him, he didn’t. The teacher asked him to bring his parents the next day because she had observed him being violent during other classes also. The boy feared bringing his parents,” she said, adding that the school would cooperate with the probe and submit the CCTV footage of the entire incident. She further termed the incident unfortunate and said they were waiting for the boy to recover to start counselling him.
Rekha, Block Education Officer, Bangalore South 1, said she visited the school, examined the CCTV footage of the incident and met the parents and teachers. “I will soon submit a report to the higher officials,” she said.
