Co-working spaces, premises that offer a shared flexible office environment for startups, corporate entities, and freelancers, have begun to make their mark in Tiruchi as they help enable a readymade model of business and reduce the overheads needed to set up operations from scratch.
The city’s geographically centralised location has made it an attractive destination for companies trying to expand their network beyond the metros. “Increasingly, professionals are finding it difficult to shift to Chennai for work because of the higher cost of living there. A co-working space in a Tier II city like Tiruchi gives companies of all sizes a chance to have employees closer to their home towns. It helps them overcome capital expenditure and structural uncertainty when compared to setting up a traditional office from scratch,” Bharath Raam, founder, KHEE Coworks, told The Hindu.
The Puthur-based facility offers affordable workspaces from individual desks to private cabins and conference rooms on a rental basis. Depending on the duration and purpose, monthly rents on average range from ₹5,000 to ₹6,000.
“At present, most of our clients are from the startup and corporate sectors. Since we own our premises, we are able to take decisions on the structural improvements needed. We are responsible for maintaining the building, ensuring the WiFi connections and accessibility,” said Mr. Raam.
At Universe Co-Works, Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) companies, recruitment agencies and education consultants are among the users operating from the facility at Thillai Nagar.
“A co-working space gives the feeling of a mini tech park, since it caters to a wide variety of companies and is open for longer hours. With the demand for call centres increasing in Tiruchi, we may see more co-working players come in,” said Shyam Harikumar, business head, Universe Co-Works.
Most co-working space companies do not own their premises, and usually lease them out from property owners on a long-term arrangement.
Real estate experts said that owing to a space crunch in the city, the suburbs had greater scope for co-working companies.
“Global capability centres and co-working office hubs have already come up in places such as Gundur and Kattur. They could help promote the city’s urban development and economic growth,” said R.S. Ravi, former president, Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India, Tiruchi chapter.
