Coco Gauff's name has now popped up to take a stance on the red-hot political topic of the inclusion of transgender athletes in women's sports. As the debate rages on, the discussions intensified after Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham made her stance clear.

During an interview with ESPN, Cunningham stated that she isn't in favour of young girls competing against biological men. According to the 29-year-old, she only wants to spread love while also protecting young girls in the locker room.

Her remark sparked massive outrage on social media and was heavily scrutinized. However, former college swimmer Riley Gaines has defended Cunningham and questioned who would think along the same lines as the WNBA star.

She later answered her own question and threw in World No. 4 Coco Gauff's name and even urged her to break the silence.

Tennis icons Martina Navratilova and Rennae Stubbs are among the players who have been the most vocal about the topic. Navratilova, the 18-time Grand Slam champion, has actively defended Cunningham on social media while standing against the inclusion of transgender athletes in women's sports. Stubbs, on the other hand, has backed the notion of transgender athletes competing in women's sports.

On the tennis front, Coco Gauff, who missed the singles glory at the Canadian Open last year after falling short against Victoria Mboko, still walked away with the silverware in the doubles event. She had teamed up with American compatriot McCartney Kessler for the event and dazzled en route to the final. The American pair squared off against Taylor Townsend and Zhang Shuai in a nail-biting thriller.

Gauff and Kessler took the opener, suffered a massive setback in the second but rallied back to claim a 6–4, 1–6, [13–11] win. However, this year, instead of teaming up with Kessler, Coco Gauff has joined hands with Caty McNally. The 22-year-old has previously bagged three doubles titles with her former partner in Washington D.C., Luxembourg and Parma.
