A video showing Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) conservancy workers of Urbaser Sumeet allegedly being made to collect used banana leaves after an event organised by TVK functionaries has sparked a controversy on social media.
The incident took place during the inauguration of Maduravoyal MLA Revanth Charan’s office.
According to sources, meals were served to TVK members at the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board’s pumping station in Valasaravakkam Zone, where the workers were allegedly asked to clean up the used banana leaves. “By then, the GCC and Urbaser Sumeet authorities had left the premises for other duties, so they could not supervise this,” sources said.
Valasaravakkam Ward Committee Chairperson V. Rajan said neither he nor the ward councillors had been invited to the event and were, therefore, not present. “This is against regulations and will be raised during the upcoming GCC meetings,” he added.
According to Urbaser Sumeet, “While the organisation does not regulate workers’ private actions after working hours, performing private catering clearance while wearing the company’s uniform is a direct violation of operational policy.”
