Consumer body Citizens’ Voice Coimbatore has submitted a representation to the Tamil Nadu government seeking administrative reforms to improve transparency, accountability and public service delivery in government offices across the State.
The organisation has urged the government to make biometric attendance mandatory for all government employees to ensure punctuality and minimise inconvenience to the public. It said strict monitoring of office entry and exit timings would improve work culture and ensure timely delivery of services.
The representation has also sought compulsory display of identity cards and name badges by all employees dealing with the public. According to the organisation, this would enhance accountability, enable citizens to identify the officials concerned and help curb the activities of middlemen in government offices.
It has further called for the display of a Citizens’ Charter in Tamil and English in every government office, detailing the services offered, documents required, the officer responsible, the prescribed time limit for each service and grievances redress contact details. Such a measure, it said, would reduce unnecessary visits, ensure time-bound service delivery and discourage demands for “speed money”.
It also urged the government to restrict the use of personal mobile phones and social media applications during office hours, except for official communications. It recommended that official communication be routed through government computers, official email IDs or secure communication systems to improve efficiency and minimise distractions.
