Tempers flared Monday night during the New York Yankees 8-5 win against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Yankee Stadium. Pirates pitcher Dennis Santana took exception to Yankees shortstop Jose Caballero at the end of the eighth inning after he grounded into a 1-6-3 double play.

Santana was seen repeatedly gesturing to Jose Caballero as the two players started walking towards each other, leading to a bench-clearing moment. The Pirates pitcher was seen being held back by teammate Rafael Flores Jr.

Immediately after the incident, fans took to social media criticizing both the players for their temperaments and the bench-clearing situation.

Before the altercation took place, Dennis Santana appeared to be frustrated over Jose Caballero’s repeated attempts to test the pitch clock. The 29-year-old waited until the final moments to get set in the box, hoping to force a violation from Santana.

Previously, the Yankees' shortstop received a warning from MLB for intentionally delaying a game in June. Santana played for the Yankees until he was designated for assignment in mid 2024 and was later claimed by the Pirates.

Before their game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. delivered a brutal assessment of his season after helping the team avoid a sweep against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He admitted that he “sucked all season.”

However, in Monday’s series opener against the Pirates, Chisholm recorded two critical home runs in an 8-5 win. His first home run came in the opening inning with two runners on, while his second came on a slider to end the seven-pitch battle against Braxton Ashcraft.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Chisholm tends to set high expectations for himself, and while that is a positive thing, “he hasn’t gone on that real, real hot streak yet.” They hope his recent performance marks the beginning of the hot streak that the team has been waiting for, as they aim for the October games.
