Madurai Corporation Commissioner Gaurav Kumar conducted a field inspection across zone 1 and zone 2 areas here on Tuesday.

During his review of the Mattuthavani Central Vegetable Market, the Commissioner assessed stall setups, vehicular access pathways, road conditions, functional street lighting, and stormwater drainage systems.

Addressing key bottlenecks caused by illegal extensions near constructed storm-water drains, Mr. Kumar issued a stern directive calling for the immediate removal of all unauthorised encroachments beyond allotted limits.

He instructed the shopkeepers to strictly operate within their designated boundary spaces to clear pathways for transport vehicles, dump non-biodegradable and organic vegetable waste in designated collection zones rather than open spaces.

He also directed the officials to monitor the area regularly to prevent sewage buildup and ensure smooth stormwater run-off and to rapidly restore the damaged roads and to immediately replace the non-functional streetlights in the area.

The Commissioner also inspected the nearby Walker’s Park, evaluating the walking tracks, outdoor fitness equipment, children’s play areas, public restrooms, and commercial kiosks inside the complex.

He ordered officials to ensure round-the-clock cleanliness and proper maintenance so local residents can exercise in a hygienic environment.

Mr. Kumar looked into the ongoing road construction under the Tamil Nadu Urban Road Infrastructure Project (TURIP), valued at ₹2.72 crore. He personally examined the laying process and material standards to ensure strict compliance with quality benchmarks.
