Hundreds of office-goers using the suburban train services on the Tambaram-Beach section faced hardship on Tuesday (July 7, 2026) after a crack in the railway track near Nungambakkam railway station resulted in trains being operated with speed restrictions.
A senior official of Southern Railway said a crack in the railway track near Nungambakkam railway station was discovered by the maintenance staff. It was immediately notified, and the maintenance staff repaired the crack by welding it. However, taking into consideration the safety of the commuters, the loco drivers were ordered to operate the trains at a slow speed.
The speed restrictions on the most populated section resulted in suburban trains being operated at a slow speed on both sides, causing delays.
S. Joshua, a commuter from Sanatorium, said that, as it is the morning rush hour, several trains are normally packed. The slow movement of the suburban trains resulted in a delay of more than 30 minutes in reaching his destination at Egmore railway station.
However, railway officials said no train services were cancelled due to this issue.
