Expectations will be high on India’s 31-member contingent for Athletics to deliver a big medal haul at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow starting on July 23.

    India won eight medals in athletics in 2022, including one gold, four silver, and three bronze medals.

    Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra headlines the squad and will enter the competition as India’s biggest medal prospect. Chopra won the gold medal in the 2018 edition but was forced to withdraw from the 2022 edition in Birmingham.

    Returning after a lengthy injury layoff, the former Olympic gold medallist will be hoping to best his competition after finishing fourth at the recent Doha Diamond League in what was his first competitive appearance in more than six months.

    Elsewhere, long jumper Murali Sreeshankar will be aiming to clinch gold after successive silver medal finishes at boththe 2022 Commonwealth Games and the 2022 Asian Games.

    National record holder Gurindervir Singh will carry India’s hopes in the 100 metre sprint event, while Sarvesh Khushare will be a strong contender in the high jump event.

    In the para-athletics event, India will be represented by a 11-member contingent led by national record holder in the T37 category Rakeshbhai Bhatt and Dilip Gavit in the 100 metres sprint.

    Both the athletics and para athletics events will start on July 27 and conclude on August 2.
