The men’s final of the team gymnastics at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Friday was temporarily halted after England’s Gabriel Langton landed awkwardly off the high bar.
Langton fell head first to the floor after missing his catch on the horizontal metal bar, three metres in the air. The 19-year-old was carefully attended to by nine medical staff and helped onto a stretcher.
Despite landing on his neck, Langton was able to move his arms in acknowledgement of the crowd’s applause as he was carried away from the arena.
In a statement, Team England said: “We are grateful to the medical teams who responded immediately to provide assistance. He has been taken to hospital, and we will share more information when it is available.”
The competition was coming to a tense conclusion but was held up for 20 minutes and the gymnasts were then offered the chance to go through another warm-up.
England eventually finished with a silver medal with Canada clinching gold in the event after 20 years.
