Jhandu Kumar opened India’s medal account at the Commonwealth Games 2026 after winning bronze in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting event in Glasgow on Friday.
Competing in Group B, Jhandu began with a successful lift of 181kg before improving to 190kg in his second attempt. The Indian attempted 196kg with his final lift but was unsuccessful.
Jhandu, who had a body weight of 72.4kg, earned 130.9 points for his best lift and finished first in Group B. The final standings were decided after combining the results from Groups A and B, with the points calculated according to each athlete’s body weight and successful lift.

Nigeria’s Riluwan Idris claimed the gold medal with 132.8 points, while England’s Matthew Harding took silver with 131.0. Jhandu finished only 0.1 points behind Harding to secure third place.
The Indian comfortably stayed ahead of Malaysia’s Nicodemus Manggoi Moses, who recorded 120.3 points.
India’s Sudhir, competing in Group A, registered successful lifts of 182kg and 183kg. His final attempt at 211kg was unsuccessful as he finished outside the podium places with 114.1 points.
