Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu lifted a total weight of 190 kg to win her third consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting event on Sunday.
Mirabai, who won the gold in the 2018 and 2022 Games, also set the Games record in snatch by lifting 85 kg.
The 31-year-old did not have the most straightforward start as she failed to lift 82 kg in her first attempt.
However, Mirabai nailed the lift in her second attempt and subsequently lifted 85 kg to break the record. Thereafter, Mirabai successfully lifted 105kg in snatch and jerk in her second attempt to secure her place on the top step of the podium.
Nigeria’s Ruth Asuquo Nyong clinched the silver medal, while Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry bagged the bronze medal.
