India’s Sachin Siwach is a strategically astute boxer who relies more on ring craft and timing rather than being flashy and flamboyant.
Considered one of the favourites for a medal in the men’s 65kg boxing event at the Commonwealth Games, the 26-year-old produced a commanding performance to outclass England’s William Hewitt 4-1 on points in a split decision verdict at the Scottish Event Campus here on Monday and advance to the quarterfinals.
The bout was fiercely contested, with neither boxer willing to give an inch. Two quick punches by Hewitt--one from the right and another from the left- set the tone for the contest. Sachin regrouped after that early burst and rarely allowed the Englishman to unleash similar combinations thereafter.
Maintaining a slightly longer range to avoid getting drawn into Hewitt’s attacking style, Sachin moved smartly around the ring, quietly adjusting his distance. The strategy worked perfectly as he was able to land his punches while making it difficult for Hewitt to connect cleanly.
Towards the end, Sachin was in complete control, landing a series of sharp punches from the sides and forcing the judges to favour him on points.

Hewitt came out aggressively in the second round, charging at the Indian in an attempt to unsettle him. But Sachin remained composed, keeping him at bay with clever footwork and maintaining a safe distance. The approach paid dividends as he scored consistently while avoiding unnecessary exchanges.
Even when 24-year-old Hewitt pushed Sachin towards the ropes, the latter remained unflustered. He absorbed the pressure, regained his position and responded by targeting the right scoring areas with meticulous ease to come out on top.
