Sarvesh Kushare won India’s first athletics medal of the Commonwealth Games 2026, claiming silver in the men’s high jump final at Scotstoun Stadium on Monday.
The 31-year-old cleared 2.05m, 2.10m, 2.15m and 2.20m at the first attempt before needing all three attempts to get over 2.25m. Jamaica’s Romaine Beckford also finished with a best of 2.25m but took gold after clearing the height at his first attempt. Both athletes then failed three times at 2.28m. England’s Kimani Jack secured bronze with 2.20m.
Kushare entered Glasgow in outstanding form, having broken the Indian national record with a 2.31m clearance at the National Inter-State Championships in Bhubaneswar on June 27. He had also made history at the 2025 World Championships by becoming the first Indian man to reach the high jump final, eventually finishing sixth.

India had three athletes entered in the final, but Tejaswin Shankar withdrew after appearing to suffer an injury following his unsuccessful opening attempt at 2.05m. Despite pulling out, the Birmingham 2022 bronze medallist remained trackside and was seen encouraging Kushare through the final stages. J Aadarsh Ram was the other Indian in action.
