India’s Sumit Kundu suffered a 1-4 defeat to Northern Ireland’s Jon McConnell in the men’s 70kg round of 16 at the Commonwealth Games 2026 on Monday, despite four of the five judges recording level totals after three rounds.
Sumit made the stronger start, taking the opening round 10-9 on three scorecards, while McConnell won it on the other two. The Northern Irish boxer was also handed a one-point deduction following a warning. McConnell edged the second round on three cards, with Sumit preferred by two judges, before taking the final round on four of the five cards.
After the deduction was applied, Judges 1, 2, 4 and 5 had the bout tied at 28-28. Judge 3 scored it 29-27 in Sumit’s favour.
The result was settled through boxing’s tie-break procedure rather than a mathematical “countback”. Under World Boxing rules, when three or more judges finish with equal totals, each tied judge must nominate the boxer they believed won the bout overall. All four judges with level cards chose McConnell, giving him a 4-1 win on points and ending Sumit’s campaign.
