Daily patronage at Amma Unavagams in the city has crossed one lakh people following measures to improve food quality, according to the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC).
The civic body said the average number of beneficiaries had increased to 1,04,102 from 67,164 in April, while monthly revenue from the outlets had risen to ₹1.36 crore from ₹87.6 lakh.
A total of 383 Amma Unavagams operate across the city, including one in each ward. Of these, seven are located in government hospitals in the Royapuram, Anna Nagar, and Teynampet zones.
The subsidised eateries cater primarily to the economically weaker sections, including daily wage workers, construction labourers, autorickshaw drivers, and people travelling to Chennai for work.
Under the scheme, breakfast includes idlis at ₹1 each and pongal at ₹5. For lunch, sambar rice, lemon rice and curry leaf rice are available at ₹5 per plate, while curd rice is priced at ₹3. In the evening, two chapatis are served for ₹3.
“The increase in patronage and revenue is due to the steps taken by the GCC to improve the quality of food served at the outlets, following directions from Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. The upgraded services have led to a substantial increase in footfall at Amma Unavagams across Chennai,” the civic body said in the release.
